ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm James
MY COMMITMENT TO YOU
To Protect and Serve
The phrase " to protect and to serve" has been used in the law enforcement field for many years since the Los Angeles Police Department added the phrase to their patrol cars in 1963. Unfortunately over the years this has just become a phrase slapped on the side of cars or logos with no real thought behind it. As your Sheriff I will put the true meaning to work for you.
To me the position of sheriff is not just a title or career achievement; it is an honor, privilege, and a promise to protect and serve the citizens of Oglethorpe County. I will work tirelessly to use my experience, knowledge, and professional relationships to benefit the county and citizens I serve.
My administration will work hand in hand with the ones on the front lines and with you, the citizens, to conquer the challenges and crime our county faces.

WHERE I COME FROM
My family is from the Smithonia community of Oglethorpe County.
I have lived in the county for most of my life, except for just a few years when I was young. My wife, Angela, and I live in the Beaverdam community.
AN EXCITING CAREER
My career in public safety started at an early age, 15 years old. I was a "junior firefighter" here in the county, while I could not do much because of my age it was still a privilege to be able to help in any way I could. Once I was of age to get my firefighter certification I did, I obtained my NPQ FF1 and state certification. I then obtained NPQ FF2. Upon graduating from high school I went to Athens Tech and obtained my EMT-Intermediate license. In 2005 I had the opportunity to become a deputy sheriff for Oglethorpe County. I worked my way up through many positions and ranks over the years. My last few years were spent as a Captain and as the 911 Director.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my career and have had many great mentors over the years. I look forward to continue serving this great county and you as your Sheriff.
